About Bharathiar University
Bharathiar University was founded by the Government of Tamil Nadu in February 1982. It was then recognised by the University Grants Commission in 1985.
The university is named after the Indian activist journalist and poet, Subramania Bharathiar. He was a leading figure in the nationalist period and a pioneer of the modern Tamil poetry style.
The university is located 15 kilometres from Coimbatore, a major city in the state of Tamil Nadu, South India. Coimbatore is one of the most industrialised cities in Tamil Nadu and is considered the textile capital of South India. Meanwhile the city’s surrounding area is important in the cotton-producing industry, and tea and coffee are grown in the nearby hills.
The university’s campus spans across 1,000 acres and is situated against the backdrop of the Maruthamalai Hills in the Western Ghat range. This is home to the Maruthamalai Temple, built by Tamil kings in the 12th century. The temple attracts increasing numbers of tourists every year.
There are 13 schools at the university, each of which are divided into specialised departments. These schools include biotechnology and genetic engineering, educational studies, and mathematics and statistics. Within each department is a range of undergraduate and graduate courses available for students to study.
The Bharathiar University Centre for Life Sciences was set up to facilitate student and staff research. The centre is equipped with modern facilities and analytical equipment to enhance the quality of research carried out. As a result the university has become a major research hub in the Tamil Nadu region.
