About Dartmouth College

Founded in 1769, Dartmouth College is a private, Ivy League university located in Hanover, New Hampshire. Its undergraduate college is home to more than 40 departments and programmes, while it also has graduate schools of Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, and Business.

The university serves more than 6,000 students, split roughly into 4,000 undergraduates and 2,000 post-graduates.

The Arts and Sciences faculty consists of 40 departments and interdisciplinary programmes. These cover many different subject areas from art history and languages to studio art and theatre, comparative literature to Jewish studies, chemistry to earth sciences, and anthropology to sociology.

Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine is the fourth oldest medical school in the US and comprises 17 clinical and basic science departments. It offers the MD degree as well as graduate education in biomedical sciences, public health and health care delivery science.

Its Thayer School of Engineering is also one of the oldest of its kind in the States. As well as undergraduate degrees, it offers a Master of Engineering Management and what is the nation’s first PhD Innovation Programme.

The Tuck School of Business, established in1900, offers a full-time MBA in addition to other non-degree programmes.

The ninth-oldest institution of higher education in the US, Dartmouth has a large off-campus network offering 45 faculty-led programmes in more than 20 countries. Around 60 per cent of undergraduates take part in one of these programmes at least once during their time at the university.

As well as drawing in sponsored research money totalling around $210 million, Dartmouth College has been classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a research university with very high research activity. In addition to this, its operating expenses typically exceed $800 million each year and it has an endowment valued at more than $4.5 billion.

Dartmouth’s traditions include a ‘Homecoming’ night when alumni return to their alma mater and take part in a parade and bonfire – dating back to 1888 – along with the current crop of students. While every spring brings the Dartmouth Pow-Wow, which draws hundreds of participants from across the Northeast to celebrate and experience Native American culture and history.
